FAQ

FAQs

Are you still producing?
Yes, but I’ve changed the way I’m doing it

How do you choose artists to work with?
I don’t choose artists to work with anymore- artists choose me. I work with everyone now, no matter who they are.

What is a production service?
My production services are individual components of the music production process. This includes things like pre-production, remote production and artist development. Doing them individually makes them more cost effective and less expensive.

Why are you offering services instead of producing records the way you used to?
I’m offering production services because people need them. They’re inexpensive and a great value for artists. I can give artists the same attention they’d get on a big budget project, while charging much less. By focusing on specific things (like pre-production) I can be much more objective about their songs. In the current music industry, I can give artists the kind of attention I want to give them, instead of producing the old school way. This is part of my ongoing commitment to help artists as much as I can.

Why do you think artists need these services?
I believe artists need these services because they’re some of the most important aspects of producing a record, yet few producers use them anymore. Because of this, most artists don’t know what pre-production is. Most artists have never had a producer help them improve their songs, simply by working on the structure. Most artists have no idea what artists development is (and neither do most record company executives and A&R people)

Why should I use your services if I can just hire a producer?
Because my services are different than hiring a producer. When you hire a producer, you’re paying for their time. This is fine- if you have a decent budget. However, most artists can’t afford to pay a producer for more than a few days. There’s also more to production than just recording and mixing. If you can only afford a producer for a few days, they may have just enough time to record and mix them, but not to make sure the structure is good. I’ve designed these services for artists who are budget conscious but need to get the best out of their material. They can also be used by producers who want their projects to be even better. With my services, you know exactly what you’re getting, how much it will cost and how much time it will take.

What is pre-production?
Pre-production is the preparation stage before recording begins. It’s when an album is assembled, songs are composed, arranged and improved (or scrapped), and performances are perfected. I work remotely, so when an artist sends me their song. I listen and find all the places where it needs improving. Depending on the service, I make notes or edit the song and send the notes and/or edited version to the artist. There are often multiple opportunities to review the song and ensure it’s ready to be recorded.

How does remote production work?
Remote production is nothing more than producing a recording from a different location than where the physical recording is being done. The process is very simple. You’re in a recording studio anywhere in the world (with someone who can engineer). I’m in my studio. I send you a Zoom invitation so we can speak to each other. You install either Source Connect or Audiomovers as a plugin on your DAW. You locate me as a Source Connect user or send me an Audiomovers invitation to your session. I accept your Audiomovers/Source Connect invitation and you accept my Zoom invitation. Once we’re connected, on both platforms, we start working on your session. Other than maybe being thousands of miles apart, it’s no different than working one on one in a studio. less expensive and more practical than working in person. My system is 1gB Ethernet.

Why do you work this way now?
I’m working this way because no one else does and I feel that someone should. Processes like pre-production and artist development involve a lot of time and hard work. I feel that so many artists everywhere need help with their music that’s not available because they can’t afford it or they don’t have a record label behind them. It’s been a dream of mine to make music production affordable for artists at every level and I believe this is the answer.

What’s the procedure for purchasing a service?
You can go to the SERVICES page on this site and select the service you want. I’ve made it easy by creating an online store where you can purchase services with a few clicks.

I’m interested in purchasing a service, but I’m confused and not sure how to move forward.
If you’re not sure what service is right for you, take a moment and think about what kind of help you want. Do you need help with your arrangements and song structuring, do you need assistance with your recording or mix, or are you looking to develop as an artist? What aspect of your creative process needs the most help right now? Once you know what you want, look on the SERVICES page and see what service corresponds with your needs.

What happens once I’ve purchased a service?
After you’ve purchased a service, you will receive an email with information about the service you’ve purchased, what you can expect and what you need to do next.

What if I need a service you don’t offer?
Ask me about it. I’m always looking for new ideas.
